Son cactus de tallo pequeño, globulares o cilíndricos. Floración diurna en verano, en tonos de amarillo. Para que las flores se abran precisan mucho calor y alta humedad en el aire. Son autofértiles, producen semillas sin abrir las flores. Se deben recoger las semillas lo antes posible porque caducan en pocas semanas.
