Brasiliopuntia, was previously included in Opuntia, but researchers have recognized that the cacti of this genus differ significantly from the other members of the subfamily Opuntioideae. It has a distinctive growth pattern that produces dimorphic shoots, and flowers produce a ring of staminodes between parts of the perianth and stamens. Pollen is also unique.
Five species have been described, but its distinctive features are mainly variations in the shape and color of the fruit, and this does not give a justification for recognition in the category of species.
