Plantas de lento crecimiento, tallos solitarios o ramificados desde la base, con las costillas tuberculadas y las flores que se abren durante el día en el verano. Estas nacen cerca de la punta de los tallos, son grandes y las especies de este genero tienen distintos tubos florales.Frutos de globosos a oblongos, normalmente seco. Semillas ovales, negro a marrón, arrugadas.
Su distribución es en el sur-oeste y la patagonia de Argentina y existen pequeñas poblaciones en Chile.
Slow-growing plants, stems solitary or branched from the base, tuberculate ribs and flowers that open during the day in the summer. Those born near the tip of the stem, are large and the species of this genus have different floral tubes. Fruits globose to oblong, usually dry. Seeds oval, black, brown, wrinkled.
The distribution is in the south-west and the Patagonia in Argentina and Chile there are small populations.
